In Haiti, it is second nature to turn to the houngans and mambos in times of crisis. The Lwas are often called to help facilitate healing for various ailments and chronic pains. In fact, it is often the first recourse for people with troubled or disordered minds. Lwas such as the Baron Samedi are often called for healing as that is a specialty of the guede. Voodoo ceremonies are performed to call upon the spirits to gain their blessings and virtues to heal a person of their ailments. Oftentimes this is coupled with standard medical treatments especially when their are psychological disorders at play. A wise houngan is able to differentiate between what is a spiritual ailment and what is a psychological or physiological issue. Many times those suffering from chronic pains or ailments that cannot be treated find relief through voodoo. Everything from pains of arthritis, migraines, insomnia, or even cancer oftentimes find relief through voodoo. this is especially true when someone falls mysteriously ill and doctors are baffled by the problem. The houngan would immediately know to ask if the person recently visited a cemetery or if they have a spiritual enemy. If the problem is determined to be spiritual in origin through a consultation the houngan determines the remedy for the condition and begins to treat the client. It is not unusual for the houngan to recommend that tradition medical treatsments still be sought however, as western medicine has many virtues in its care and treatments.
